The BAMcinématek’s Jenet on Film program continues today with Querelle, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s final film before his suicide in 1982.

It is based on Jean Genet’s 1942 novel, Querelle de Brest, and is a perfect fit for a filmmaker like Fassbinder. Both men mixed themes of homosexuality with brutal violence in their respective mediums, with Fassbinder being extremely prolific in his craft. He’s one of my favorite auteurs, being that he made 35 films in 13 years before dying of a cocaine/sleeping pill overdose, way before he could become boring and irrelevant. He made/wrote/directed, and/or starred in a film every 100 days, did drugs, cruised, got bored and ended it. This one should be a good one. Showtimes at 4:30, 6:50, and 9:15 tonight. Here is how to get there.
